Tired of replacing the glass windshield in your track Miata? MiataCage has designed a quick release system that allows the easy and quick installation and removal of a Polycarbonate (lexan = generic term) windshield for 1990-2005 Mazda Miata's.
The system consists of an aluminum frame that gets riveted to the OEM windhsield surroud that has laser cut rivet holes for installing it to the vehicle as well as pre-cut hexagonal holes (patent pending) for utilizing 1/4 turn (dzus style) fasteners.
Install the aluminum frame in your car and you can then have the polycarbonate windshield in and out of the car in minutes. This makes it ideal for cleaning and working on and in the dash area. For my personal cars, when they are in the shop the windshields are always out of them until its time to head to the track again.
Quarter turn (dzus style) fasteners can be difficult to align in some applications, so we engineered the windshield to have 2 small tapered grooves at the bottom of the windshield that index 2 vertical alignment pins (removeable) on the windsheild frame to center the windshield vertically and horiontally to the frame. The holes in the frame are hexagonal (patent pending) to allow for more clearance of the quater turn fastener to the spring making it very easy to get the quarter turn fasteners aligned and installed.
In inital testing it takes roughly 1 minute to take the windshield out and 2 minutes to put it back in with 1 person and not hurrying. If I tried really hard, I bet I could cut that down to 30 seconds out and 1 minute in, and even less if it was 2 people at the same time.
The windshield weighs about 7lbs less than the glass equivalet.
With glass replacement costs in the $300 to $375.00 range (installed) this thing pays for itself in no time. Once the frame is in the car, you no longer need the entire kit and would only ever need the polycarbonate windshield. Unfortunately we have crash tested this in an NC that had multiple roll overs in turn 5 at Road Atlanta and not only did the windshiled stay in place, other than some very minor cracking around one of the fasterners it was good to go. The car was totaled, but if it could have been repaird to go back on track, the windshield was not one of things that needed to be fixed.

Pre-cut to fit formed (molded) windows are CNC cut to the exact size required to fit into the window frame.
